Originally released in 1985, Hell Awaits saw Slayer push far beyond the raw aggression of their debut, introducing the darker songwriting, intricate arrangements and uncompromising intensity that would become the blueprint for extreme metal. Guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, alongside Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo, crafted an album that expanded the boundaries of thrash while laying the foundations for countless death and black metal bands that followed.
